Then in unpacked directory GNUMail-1.2.0/ I run make and get:
This is gnustep-make 2.6.2. Type 'make print-gnustep-make-help' for help.

make[2]: *** [internal-framework-run-compile-submake] Error 2

What can I do to solve this problem?

You appear to miss AddressView dev files. How did you install it?
If you installed from debian package... then i don't know, because it happens for me too. I don't know exactly how the makefiles should be written to include a Framework, perhaps it is not 100% correct. if I install also addresses form source though, it works (on other installations I have)
