I use a patched cdrecord to burn DVD-R and DVD-RW on a NEC ND-1300a with
original firmware 1.05
Works like a charm at 4x speed for -R and 2x for -RW (haven't seen any -RW 4x)
I still use version 2.01a05 but there is already a patch for the latest 2.01a16
at
http://people.mandrakesoft.com/~warly/files/cdrtools/archives/

I also use dvd+rw-tools to burn DVD+RW and again no problem at all at 2.4x speed
I haven't got any DVD+R media, yet.
It is reported that dvd+rw-tools could also burn DVD-RW media but I haven't
experimented yet.

Anyway, with a recent patched cdrecord and dvd+rw-tools you can burn any media
under Linux which I think is great,
specially when you do not have _any_ copy of Windows lying around.
I use Gentoo, BTW.

Haven't touched a WINDow$ box in two years, never seen XP, couldn't feel better
;-)

Greetings,
Xavier
