You are right, and to an extent I will try to provide the most
compatible options. Within limits -- if e.g. IE 6 does not work but IE
7 does, you can tell people to just upgrade.

What I did is create an eLyXer Math Showcase:
  http://www.nongnu.org/elyxer/math.html
with the most common math features so people can decide if eLyXer
works for them. It is now generated with midspaces instead of math
spaces, it should be more compatible.
