How about "recentf-mode". It even remembers across sessions. Just enable
the mode, all files you visit (even drag-n-drop) gets stored. With
CTRL-o, it opens a buffer with the list of files opened and can be
selected from mouse. With C-x-f (find-file), using the up/down arrow
keys, you can scroll through the files recently opened.
