There seems to be some amount of confusion here.  Wikipedia

says that the Meta key is emulated on modern keyboards by either the Alt or 
Windows keys.  The statement was written by "Cate" 
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Cate) and has been there since 2005.

The Emacs manual says, "We refer to <Alt> as <Meta> for historical reasons" 
(Section 2.)  Is Emacs imagining a strict connection between <Alt> and <Meta> 
which doesn't actually exist?
