Well...  `error' is a Lisp function, so I can't really call it from
there?  If I call Fsignal instead, like:

    Fsignal (Fintern(build_string("error"), Vobarray),
             build_string("Blocking call to accept-process-output with quit 
inhibited!!"));

I don't get a backtrace, and the process apparently stops working.
