What am I missing? We're not talking about the same thing. IIUC you're talking about unifying display-buffer-names and display-buffer-regexp (I think this can be done by obsoleting display-buffer-names), whereas I'm talking about adding support for symbols like `ediff-A' which would need to be provided by the caller of display-buffer.
