Have you seen the amount of activity on GNU ELPA, MELPA, el-get, and
others?  The amount and variety of packages are amazing.

Heh heh.  As someone on both sides (Gnus and Emacs) I have to say
contributing to Gnus through Git has been much less stressful for me.
