Rather, wait and see, instead of hurrying to put those into the API.
The only reason to have STRING-AFTER and STRING-BEFORE is potential mode specific optimization. If that's not a concern, no need for that.
Performance may be a concern, but we don't know that yet. As long as they're not required for correctness, let's not get ahead of ourselves.
