If we were going to reformat all the sources, I'd rather we observe the rule
"never use tabs". I don't see what benefit they possibly offer.

I agree. "Always use spaces" is just simpler in pretty much all aspects: no need to worry about tab width or tabs intermixes and it works with all editors. The only drawback being file size but it's been over a decade that this is no longer an argument.
