ELi and I, the Emacs maintainers, are both opposed to making
delete-selection-mode the default.  Please don't do that.

The stated aim of that change is to cater to newcomers at the expense
of experienced users.  That is a clumsy and unhelpful approach.  If we
think about it, maybe we can cater better to all users.
