Please show the customizations, I still don't understand the issue

What Unicode blocks does this font support more-or-less fully?  In
particular, does it have any glyphs in the Box Drawing block?

In general, it is not a good idea to choose as your default a font
that cannot display symbol and punctuation characters, because Emacs
prefers the default fonts for those.  I'm guessing your fontset
customizations somehow disabled that.
