It's a frequent practice, but often a marketing move, so it might feel kind of dirty to us techies.
Then, and this is an option that will request less up-front effort, we can go with the "UFO" approach, and then anybody doing spelunking in the old issues would follow the link to the original report and directly email the author with a follow-up question (and ask them to register only then).
