Actually, looking through configure, we also have motif and athena and
'none', so itʼs 6, not 3. I get your point about the GTK bug, but that
issue has been ignored by the GTK folks for at least 15 years.

(and before anyone pins their hopes on pure gtk: pgtk emacs using a
wayland display connection forwarded over ssh with waypipe has the
same failure mode)
