Actually this is not the best interface, it was okay five years ago or so, 
when the number of individual emojis was still reasonable, but that method 
doesn't scale well, now that there are more and more emojis.  I think the 
ideal interface to enter emojis would be to have:

1. a "recently used" list,

2. a search field in which you type something to describe the emoji you 
want, like "pig", which displays a list with the "pig", "pig nose" and 
"pig face" emojis,

3. and on the elements of these two lists, a way to select one of its 
variants.
