Hello, all of you!

I am glad to announce the first release of Femlisp. In July, I have
obtained permissions from the University of Heidelberg to release Femlisp
under a modified BSD license. I then applied for hosting of Femlisp at the
server "savannah.nongnu.org" run by the FSF (I think) which was also
granted. Now, I am back from holidays, so that I can watch the mailing
list for any questions that should appear.

I consider the next months as a testing phase, where Femlisp will be used
predominantly by people who know Common Lisp or at least Scheme, and who I
think will be able to dig their way through installing all necessary
software. The hard part is to install CMUCL, Ilisp (if you need it), and
Matlisp, the rest should be easy.

Somewhat later, say at the beginning of next year, I want to supply also a
shell script which installs from scratch a CL environment sufficient for
using Femlisp. This will then target people who did not yet work with CL.
But it is clear that this can only be undertaken if Femlisp itself has
proven to work for you. And also the documentation will have to become
much better before such a public release.

You can download Femlisp using CVS with

  cvs -d:pserver:address@hidden:/cvsroot/femlisp login
  cvs -z3 -d:pserver:address@hidden:/cvsroot/femlisp co femlisp

When this has succeeded I suggest that you read the files README, INSTALL,
FAQ and follow the instructions given there.

Femlisp's main home page remains at <http://www.femlisp.org>, but the
download area is at <https://savannah.nongnu.org/cvs/?group=femlisp>.

I hope that working with Femlisp is as much fun for you as it is for me.
Please, do not hesitate to ask on the mailing list address@hidden

Yours,

Nicolas.
