I considered the idea of building a toolkit-independent
GUI layer for FreeRIDE, and it looks like you have
been following more or less the same line of thought.

Did you try Locana ?   http://www.locana.org
it's about the same idea.
It's from the same guy who wrote ArunaDb.
He still doesn't support GTK and FXRuby but
the framework is already laid out and it already
works with some sort of Win32 native toolkit
and also TK.

I am not completely sure this is the way FreeRIDE
should go, but at least it guarantees some
portability until we come up with something better.

I also thought of other ideas, like creating an
even higher level of abstraction, but it would
probably end up looking miserably awful.

I am going to have a look at your Wiki, maybe
there's some overlapping with other ideas.

cheers,

If you're like me and you regularly look at the "Recent Changes" page of our wiki, then you probably already know that I've been working on a "GUI Core" design document:

It has progressed a little more slowly than I would have liked (too many other things competing for my attention), but there is enough there already to give you a feeling for the approach I am taking. The basic architectural ideas are written up and mostly what is left to do is to fill out the details on the GUI components.

One of the primary goals is to create an easy-to-use interface to the FreeRIDE GUI system that is independent of any particular rendering system (FOX, GTK+, etc).

Please take a look and feed me your comments and questions.

Curt
