Not necessarily. If the FSFC is not a registered charity, there is no need for separate entities. If the FSFC is a registered charity, its political activities will be restricted, and, if the free software types associated with it wish to engage in prohibited polictical activities, they will need to set up a separate association.

Well, that's what I mean. I think it's a good idea to set up a charitable foundation, which would further the cause (fund?) Free Software, while at the same time a political entity for furthering the cause of Free Software would also be a good thing.

I am assuming that the advantage of being a registered charity would be an increase in donations, since the tax write-off is a further incentive, right? Are there other implications of being a charitable foundation?
