Thanks, I hadn't thought of the diagonals problem.  Understanding the
general principle has certainly made things more clear in terms of my
personal understanding, I can't speak for anyone else :)

I've made a note in the map-rewrite code to create diagonal-first and
diagonal-last outline iterators.  Although I can't think where general
ones would be useful either, that doesn't mean to say that no-one else
will in future, and if I'm going to include 3x3 diagonals, I'd rather
include general ones as well.
