you can already change the saturation and brightness, for example, with
the actual system, using red color you can achieve all the shade in the
attached file.

about working with hue shift, it would be better have 2 fixed colors to
change than just random applying multiple colors.
Homeworld used a double player color and the result was actually quite
nice, but, anyway, you couldn't play a map with more than 4 people (as far
as I remember)
