Ok, I propose the following images.

For GRUB Legacy:

For GRUB 2:

I'll include these images and the svg source files in my NuevoSentido theme.

When your doing searches for info, it may be helpful to tack 'debian'
into the search, as its entirely possible they have changed the way
splashes are handled.

Yes, thanks. Debian "lenny" is using GRUB 2 now and the constraints have changed:

gNewSense is using GRUB Legacy (0.97), so I'm going to do splash images for both.
