It does. We normally do:
AT+CREG=2
AT+CREG?
AT+COPS?
to gather network information.

However it is disabled for Sony-Ericsson phones. Comment in there says:
/* Sony Ericsson phones can't do AT+CREG=2 (only CREG=1), so just
 * skip that and only do COPS */
