I did manage to make this work, but only after I moved up to the 1.1
branch (I had been using 1.0.6 on my FreeBSD machines).

I wouldn't mind just moving up to the 1.1 branch (I'd get star-merge
back, and supposedly even arbitrary-length version numbers), but it is
after all a development branch so I'm worried about trashing my
archives. How risky is it if I use one of the "released" 1.1
snapsnots (e.g 1.1pre5)? Will I get into trouble if I move back and
forth between 1.0 and 1.1?
