I like that idea.  A lot.  But does sftp let you stat() a file on the
remote side?  Could we have something like this in case it doesn't?

.arch-params/=meta-info/=archive-umask
.arch-params/=meta-info/=category-umask
.arch-params/=meta-info/=branch-umask
.arch-params/=meta-info/=version-umask
.arch-params/=meta-info/=patchlevel-umask

Each umask would apply to all subdirectories, unless it was overridden
by a more specific umask.
