It's a funny article if you have my background.

Where I come from, Gosling is a notoriously sloppy coder.   The quote
(and really, it was just in fun, not an actual threat) that made the
rounds of people who inherited his code was "I wanna rip Gosling's
lungs out" [nods of approval all around the conference table].

So when he says things like:

   One of the traditional things to screw up in C code is opening a data
   file to read. It's semi-traditional in the C world to not check the
   return code, because you just know the file is there, right? So you
   just open the file and you read it.

I have to conclude that there's a certain amount of projection there.
