The rationale is that tree-lint and show-changeset are, for the most
part, "report generation" commands -- explicitly designed to prefer
more human-readable over more program-readable output where there is
that choice to be made.

Both commands internally work roughly this way: they do their work
building up a structure of the data they need to report; then they
report that data.   That should make it very easy to modify them with
new options for more "pipe-worthy" output formats -- an improvement
I'd happily accept.
