For now, remount your system in binary mode.

Lode, you need to make all the file open calls in tla explicitly binary.
hackerlab is probably the right place to do this. Tom and I had a
discussion waaay back about exposing this to hackerlab clients, and we
didn't come to an agreement - the ascii/binary schism is pretty darn
yucky at the best of times.
