tla works fine out of the box through my work's http proxy.

I just set the "http_proxy" environment variable:

   export http_proxy="http://vproxy.lsi.nec.co.jp:8080";

This proxy doesn't require a password, but is otherwise pretty anal
(e.g. only allows well-known http-related ports, times out eagerly).
