When installing dash, there's a debconf question asking whether you
want dash to be /bin/sh, noting that any breakage of Debian init
scripts or maintainer scripts that may occur as a result of this is a
Debian policy violation.

I'm open to the possibility that answering "yes" to this question
constitues going out of one's way to mangle it, though.
