Alfred,  the Hurd is a kernel.  I don't think Tom's work overlaps with the kernel.

And a powerful file system layer for applications is very useful for many applications on many platforms.

Is there a specific reason why you are reinventing the wheel?  All of
this is already provided by the Hurd.
