Excuse me, but could you please specify what we should do for this purpose: we lack very basic knowledge on licensing matters.To avoid any problems that might stop current distributors from updating the file, you should dual license it under either the Artistic License, or the GNU GPL 3 or any later version.

Would the new license terms also apply to earlier versions? gNewSense (Ubuntu 8.04) still has db4.2 in its repo and its newest version is 4.6.
