SHANGHAI, China — Western automakers have been incensed before by what
they say are Chinese copies of their products. Now Fiat and Daimler have
carried the dispute into court, filing suit against two automakers in
China that they say are ripping off their products. Fiat says the Great
Wall Peri is too close to the Fiat Panda, while Daimler says the Smart
Fortwo is being copied in the Shuanghuan Noble.

The Noble was not put on exhibit at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show last
month, reportedly because of Daimler's objections to the design.
However, the European importer, Martin Motors of Italy, displayed it at
the Bucharest auto show this fall and has renamed the car as the
Shuanghuan Bubble for Europe. Automotive News reported this week that
the name change was to avoid another potential legal dispute — with
Noble Automotive of the U.K.

Martin Motors is expecting to show the "Bubble" again at the Bologna,
Italy, auto show in December and to start selling the car in Italy,
Austria and Romania by year's end, and then elsewhere in Europe next
spring. The publication says the little car won't make a German debut
until the Daimler legal flap is over.

Other complaints against Shuanghuan Auto in the recent past include
BMW's legal proceedings against the European importer of the company's
Sceo, which it called a copy of the BMW X5, and Toyota's complaint about
the UFO, which the Japanese automaker said was too close to the RAV4.

What this means to you: Look at the photos and judge for yourself while
waiting to see what the real judges will say.
