I would think Andreas knows best here regarding Debian
packages.

Well, there are always reasons for this or that desicion.  IMHO the
config file in /etc/gnumed/gnumed.conf should contain all options
but commented out and documented via comments.  Then we do not need
any extra example.

Andrea's Debian installer puts the client under /usr/bin/python2.3 so
I gather any users logged into such a machine would all access a
shared copy of the client
Yes.

Sure.  gnumed-client is just another program on the machine as mozilla,
gimp or whatever.  There is no reason at all to have duplicates of the
code for every single user.
