"other updates"?  Are you installing gpsd from source?  Or from your
distros package?

Look at your build log to confirm.  Or use "find".

The use the gcc -L option: gcc myprog -o myprog -L/usr/local/lib -lgps

Umm.  gpsd has no command "install".  And has no -dev fork.

Looks like you are using your distro packages?  Every distro
is different.  You need to ask them what they did.

Well, chasing them here will not work well.  We don't know what distro
you have, or what their packages might look like.  You need to
ask them.  Or, install from our source.
