As a point of clarification, the significance of the
*scratch* buffer is that it has the command
eval-print-last-sexp, normally bound to C-j, and that
is the command you should use to execute the function
there. Then the output is automatically inserted into
the buffer (as is also the case with the suggested
function which works in any buffer).

If you execute with the more usual eval-last-sexp (C-x
C-e) in any buffer (not just the *scratch* buffer),
the string echoes in the echo area and you cannot get
at the string itself there. But the _value_ of the
string is most likely what you are trying to get ahold
of if you are doing this. However, you can still
chase it down in the *Messages* buffer in this case.

I prefer using the suggested function in the buffer
where I want to use the string.
