I'm using plain:
(setq nnmail-crosspost 'nil)
(setq nnmail-split-methods
... lengthy list of split rules ...)

I have:
(setq gnus-secondary-select-methods '((nnml "")))
in my .gnus.el, so I figure I use nnml.
