I get:
"Kernel does not support 64 bit cpu"
Is it exact error message? When is it printed? Is it output by grub or
kernel? I do not see this error in grub.
Oops, the spelling is a little different:
kernel doesn't support 64-bit CPUs

Can you please search for this phrase again in the sources, and also in
2.02 and 2.04 ?

The only similar error message in upstream grub is

"kernel does not support 64-bit addressing"
