IMHO a fork is not necessarily a bad thing here. GNU Smalltalk is mature
software; the smalltalk-mode included is compatible with emacs as far
back as 21 and Xemacs, whereas ELPA is only targeted for modern emacs
like 24 and up. Also it is one file of only a few thousand lines and not
likely to grow much bigger. Judged by the rate of changes for the last
few years even elisp newbie like me can keep them in sync, and I do plan
to do that if no one better than me claim the job.
