What about using a user defined macro?
Something like (untested)
@ifhtml
@macro span{classname, text}
@inlinefmt{html, <span class="\classname\">\text\<span>}
@end macro
@end ifhtml
@ifnothtml
@macro span{classname, text}
\text\
@end macro
@end ifnothtml
