with emacs, you don't call it up every time you want to edit a file.
instead, your day starts with emacs, and from therein you visit files,
read emails etc.  to quickly fire it up for small changes, you can
also use it's server mode, in which case the small client code pops up
an emacs buffer without re-initializing the entire apparatus.

for quick changes i still use nvi(1)  :)
