gnus hangs

sometimes gnus seem to hang while accessing news / imap server, i
can't figure what's the exact conditions. 

e.g. if i press 'g' in *Group* buffer it'll fetch headers on one
server then hang on the next one forever or till i press 'C-g'
whichever comes first and continue with the next server after. If I
press 'g' right after - it works ok. 

<speculation>
I speculate that one of the servers is the last accessed or something
and gnus loses connection with it but doesnt notice. when i press
'C-g' this connection isnt considered present anymore and when i press
'g' again it's reestablished. 
</speculation>

the same happens sometimes on leaving the group or exiting gnus or
after i've been writing an article for too long.

is there a remedy?
