"G" marks messages that are killed from server (you can't reach them
anymore).

I saw the star only when I subscribe to some group and first it's
showing was with the start. I think newly subscribed group marks that
way.

I use adaptive scoring and catchup at the end of reading. Catch up can
be more flexible and done to region or from/to the point.
You can read help about adaptive scoring. It is very usefull.
