Right.  If I do the same:

(nnimap-open-server "mail.company.com")

I get the more expected backtrace:

Debugger entered--Lisp error: (error "mail.company.com/imap Name or service not 
known")

However, this code has recently changed quite a bit -- do you still get
the same backtrace?
