Yes, but I would suggest you to use local IMAP server (e.g. dovecot
on Linux/Ubuntu) to allow using/switching a few email clients. Different
clients are the best for different tasks. Dovecot *CAN* store user's
emails in ~/Maildir and allow access to it via IMAP.
BTW Gnus can be configured to access Maildir via dovecot provided IMAP
sessions even without "system-wide" IMAP server.
