Nick,

I think that if we HAVE to use ld directly, then we should
add all the libraries that would normally get passed to
ld when invoked by the compiler driver.  If some version of the
toolchain is broken, then we should test for it.  I'm guessing
that C++ does work properly on some version of NetBSD
(one of my favorite OS's BTW, even though my SGI Indy still
won't boot from the disk ;) and this part of your patch is
bound to break them.  This is one of the resons I changed
the tagdemo tests to use C++ IO.  Does your patch cause
the tagdemo tests to pass?
I just don't see how this could work, because it isn't linking
to any C++ runtime libraries, if you can explain how it
does then I'll gladly apply your patch.  I don't really know
much about what I do here, but this looks bad to me.
