OK so this one really is a regression with the patch series.  bisect
converges at the "teach libtool -L= and -R=" patch.

I think the issue is that some code paths now absolutize formerly
relative paths to in-tree deplibs which then somewhere messes up
later.  Below's a context diff of good vs. bad log output.

I'm still not sure whether it's the patch or the test that is wrong.
Will investigate further, but might be a couple of days.  I'm sure
this is fixable though.
