Support for this feature is not present in the libtool 1.4 stable branch.
C++ libraries are in fact barley supported at all prior to libtool-1.4b (1.4a
is a random snapshot from the CVS trunk somewhere between 1.4 and 1.4b, and is
not even alpha quality).

The libtool web pages talk about the version system we use.
