Right.  I misread that.
Same thing with the cvs version.

Yes.  I ran "make check" without a "make" first.
This seems to work on Linux...
Running make first makes tests/mdemo-make.test pass on Solaris.

ARGZ_H = argz.h
BUILT_SOURCES = $(ARGZ_H)
