See definition of portato for example in page B-10 of (1.5 MB):

http://www.advancement.cnet.navy.mil/products/web-pdf/tramans/bookchunks/10244_ind.pdf

Portato is denoted by using marks of giving the note the full length (slur
or staccato) and a staccato sign. Usually portato is denoted by make tie
between notes with a slur and putting staccato signs for each notes. When
you have individual notes with no slurs then tenuto and staccato signs are
used together. Hence, with "\portato" one should get a tenuto sign
_nearer_ the note head and a staccato sign further the note head.

Maybe this is an error in general. If you have both tenuto and staccato
signs, you should have the tenuto sign _nearer_ the note. Then the result
is then exactly portato.

What look beautiful .. maybe the following: The angle formed by the line
ends of the tenuto sign and the dot of the staccato sign is about a
straight angle.
