problem building pnmtopng

I have problems building pnmtopng.
The building goes ok, but then
$ pnmtopng
pnmtopng: error while loading shared libraries: libpng.so.3: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory
even though I have
PNGLIB = -L$(PNGDIR) -L$(HOME)/usr/$(HOSTTYPE)/lib -lpng
in my Makefile (in pnmtopng) and
$ ls $HOME/usr/$HOSTTYPE/lib/libpng.so.3
/users/rz/usr/i686/lib/libpng.so.3
... ?
